Twenty-one percent of the physicians in a Medscape survey said they had undergone a medical peer review of their patient care at least once. A majority of doctors believed that peer reviews most often were motivated by overall quality improvement and to avoid possible mistakes in clinical decisions. But many physicians also told Medscape they were concerned that the peer-review process could be commandeered to punish them for unrelated reasons or to remove competition for staff doctors.
