The prospect of answering a complaint filed with their state medical review board doesn't make any physician feel great. The numbers aren't huge; only 23% of the doctors responding to a Medscape survey had ever been the subject of a board review. Still, knowing that board oversight is a reality has an impact. Sixty-two percent of physicians said the prospect of a board complaint has at least a little effect on their patient communications, and 72% admitted it has some influence over how they perform tasks such as issuing prescriptions.
